The Oxford summer school experience is so much more than just academia. It's also the social events, the activities, and the friendships you form that make studying with us such a magical experience.
Our summer school's busy social calendar allows you to sample all the aspects of life in the UK alongside your academic work, whilst forming friendships with your peers which last a lifetime.
Below are a few samples of what we offer as part of the summer school experience.
Experience the River Cherwell on a punting trip
“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.
— Ratty, 'The Wind in the Willows'
The experience of commanding a boat with nothing but a pole to guide you is unforgettable. As part of OFL you will have the chance to sample this strangely enjoyable way of travelling, as you guide your boat through the shallow, maze-like waters of the river Cherwell on a warm summers' evening.
Relax with friends at Formal Hall
Formal Hall is a fantastic tradition where once a week students and staff gather together in the Hall for a shared formal dinner to relax and enjoy themselves away from the pressures of the outside world. A spectacular end to the week, we are proud to share this quaint tradition with you, which marks a great end to every week you spend with us.
....AND CONTINUE THE EVENING WITH DANCING
Another tradition is that of the 'bop', where after Formal Hall students go to their common room to relax and continue the evening. As part of OFL, you'll take part in an evening of dancing in the Hall to continue the festivities - with the ancient paintings on the walls as your audience.
EXPAND YOUR CULTURAL HORIZONS IN THE SHELDONIAN THEATRE
Experience the glorious ceremonial hall of the University of Oxford, the Sheldonian theatre, from the inside, as you listen to a concert in the historic venue. Thousands of undergraduates have graduated here as well as matriculated, and the building is a masterpiece of seventeenth-century architecture. As you listen to the orchestra, look up and see the glorious achievement of Robert Streater's mural on the ceiling - thirty two painted panels entitled Truth Descending upon the Arts and Sciences.
SEE SHAKESPEARE COME TO LIFE IN AN OPEN-AIR PERFORMANCE
The language of Shakespeare is where the English language reaches its apogee. Glory in its soaring rhetoric as part of one of our highly popular open-air theatre trips, where a glittering cast of actors and actresses bring the language to life by performing a Shakespeare play in one of the college gardens.
GO GHOST HUNTING IN OXFORD
Partly a genuinely scary walk around a night-time city, and partly one of the funniest comedy shows you've ever seen, the ghost tour we offer as part of Oxbridge Future Leaders is always a sure-fire hit.
